ABOUT RYAN
Based in Nova Scotia, Ryan's practice focuses primarily on criminal defence. He represents individuals charged with serious offences at every stage of the criminal process, from bail hearings and pre-trial applications through trials, sentencing hearings, and appeals.
Ryan also acts as amicus curiae in complex criminal proceedings, has extensive experience representing Indigenous clients, and provides independent legal advice to sexual assault complainants.
Before entering private practice, Ryan served as Crown counsel in Toronto, Yellowknife, and Vancouver. Having worked on both sides of the criminal justice system, he brings valuable insight into prosecutorial decision-making, investigative practices, and trial strategy.
In addition to his work as counsel, Ryan serves as an adjudicator on administrative tribunals and is Chair of the Criminal Appeals Committee for Nunavut Legal Aid, where he reviews convictions, sentences, and potential grounds of appeal.
Known for meticulous preparation, practical advocacy, and thoughtful legal analysis, Ryan has a particular interest in complex criminal litigation, including cases involving constitutional issues, forensic evidence, and appellate advocacy.
